Voxengo MSED 3.3.49

When you listen to music in stereo, not everything that you hear from the left speaker is identical to what you hear from the right. This is usually unnoticed by the average listener and is a result of efficient mixing and mastering. The process of panning one channel to the left or right gives an instrument some space, thus making the sounds clearer.
There are also plugins that you can use to split a stereo signal into separate mid and side channels. The mid channel should contain the sounds that are identical in both the left and right speakers, while the side channel should contain everything that is different. You will then be able to adjust these channels with greater precision.
Voxengo MSED is an audio plugin that can encode (split) a stereo signal into two separate mid and side channels, but also decode the two channels back into one stereo signal. The interface offers you minimalistic control, with two gain knobs and two pan knobs assigned for each channel. MSED also helps you visualize the signal better with a stereo correlation meter (named “Correlometer”), a right/left balance meter and a “plasma” vector scope.
The plugin also features a few presets and many customizable color themes..

How many ways can I say “WTF”?

(Warning: I have not been posting lately because I’m busy writing another novel. I am pleased to report that it is being well-received by others, so at least I have a good excuse.)

But before I run out of excuses, here is a funny WTF photo I found on Flickr.

What the hell was that?

I thought it was a monkey playing with a huge chunk of metal. When I went to the image source and clicked the “Contact the Photographer” link, I was greeted with the question: “This is a f*cking robot. Isn’t it cool? I built it. I only have 1 so that’s why it’s so expensive.”

Look, I get it. I built one of those during the summer. I can totally understand the fascination and I’d love to chat about it with the person that built this thing. But this was not a monkey. This was a robot. It has no arms or legs. It’s an advanced machine that moves through a predetermined path, does something and then returns to that path. It has no idea what it is doing and it cannot get in trouble, which means it’s far more friendly than any monkey I’ve ever seen.

So how did it get into this situation? The guy who built it put it in the hands of a monkey, who proceeded to clobber it. And he got away with it.

So how did the photographer catch the little bastard? With a camera, of course.

I’ve always wanted to try that, but I’d worry about the person staring into the lens when they were walking into the frame.

Why was the trophy case in the House passed as an amendment to the Senate?

On June 19, 2018, the House of Representatives passed an amendment to the United States Senate appropriations bill, H.R. 2, that would make the National Museum of African American History and Culture a permanent exhibit, and make it possible to award it a national museum designation, the highest designation that can be given to an institution.
The proposed amendment as reported by Congress.gov states that:

In order to designate the museum as a National Monument, Mr. Graham would be required to provide a report on its operations, to include the following:
The amount of funding and other resources required to operate the museum on a sustained basis;

In a separate provision of the bill, H.R. 2, the original text was changed to:

To designate the Museum of African American History and Culture as a National Museum of African American History and Culture;

This change was made by adding an amendment to the bill, H.J.Res. 14, which was passed on December 14, 2018, and signed by President Donald Trump on December 15, 2018.
Why was the trophy case passed as an amendment to the Senate instead of as a stand-alone bill?

A:

It’s a continuation of the same issue that we saw with health care reform: It’s entirely possible to pass a bill

MSED plugin can be used as a standalone VST plugin or it can be used in the MSED Script Plugin Editor (plugin is not available for Mac OSX). The plugin has a simple interface and you will only need to play with the mid and side channels, the panning of the channels is automatic.
MSED is compatible with all digital audio workstations, but also with FL Studio.
There are many more plugins that you can use to get more details out of your audio. One of them is the Spectra plugin from Redigit. In the forums, this plugin can be used as a stereo remover that you can apply to a mono signal in order to get a stereo signal. This signal can be split into mid and side channels, and the MSED plugin can be used to create side panned sounds. It does not need the MSED Plugin Editor in order to function and it also has a more intuitive interface.

The Script Plugin Editor is a powerful tool for VST development which makes it easy to program or edit the plug-ins. You can use it to automate some functions and to add extra features to your plug-ins. You can also generate the VST version of your plugin in a few clicks. The interface is simple and clean, and consists of 6 main tabs for the plug-ins, presets and other useful features. You can select a folder where your plug-ins will be installed or click on the Download button to open the download manager. The downloaded plug-ins are automatically installed. In the “Write” tab you can use the language of your choice, save the current plugins in a project, import

A cautionary tale about postoperative analgesic and sedative use in infants.
The purpose of this study was to determine the percentage of infants in which inadequate analgesia and sedation occurred after surgery. The main outcome variable was the percentage of infants in which inadequate analgesia and/or sedation occurred during the first 24 hours postoperatively. A retrospective chart review was conducted of 141 infants less than 6 months old who underwent two common types of operations (laparotomy or appendectomy). The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification, age, and the type of operation were noted. Five infants (3.5%) received inadequate analgesia, and 13 infants (9.2%) received inadequate sedation. Of the 13 infants, 9 received inadequate analgesia alone, and 4 received inadequate sedation alone. Infants receiving inadequate sedation were more likely to be younger and have an ASA classification of 1 or 2 (P = 0.01), but were not more likely to have other comorbidities (P = 0.65). The mean time to first postoperative analgesia was 3.8 hours, and the mean time to first postoperative sedation was 12.1 hours. One of the 13 infants who received inadequate sedation alone had delayed recovery of feeding and bowel function and presented later with bowel distention. All other infants tolerated their postoperative analgesia and sedation without adverse effects. The results of this study illustrate that many infants are receiving inadequate analgesia and sedation, and the duration of postoperative analgesia and sedation may be prolonged. Although the results of this study show that inadequate analgesia and/or sedation rarely result in acute adverse effects
